Tony Rudman, founder of Utah’s Westates Theatres chain, has died. He was 84.

The cinema chain was once the largest in the West and continues to operate more than 70 screens in four states.

Rudman died Aug. 6, six days short of his 85th birthday, after suffering a fall outside his home, said his son, T.J. Rudman.

“He’s a self-made man, and extremely successful, and he worked very, very hard,” the younger Rudman said of his father.

Rudman was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Scofield, Utah. He started working at age 12, herding sheep. He made enough money to pay for his own tuition at Wasatch Academy when he was 15.

At 17, he enlisted with four other Carbon County boys in the United States Marine Corps. They served in the Pacific in World War II, in the first wave of troops in Tarawa and Saipan. Rudman was wounded, taking shell fragments in his legs that remained for the rest of his life. He was the only one of that Carbon County group to survive the war.

Rudman got into the movie business in the 1950s as a film runner, getting paid $25 a week. He then worked as a film buyer for RKO Pictures and later started his own film buying and booking service. In 1958, he bought his first theater, the Davis Drive-In in Layton.

Among the theaters Rudman had a hand in opening were the Water Gardens Cinema in Pleasant Grove, the Tooele Cinema 6 in Tooele and the now-defunct Trolley Theatres and Trolley Corners multiplexes near downtown Salt Lake City.

The Westates chain now operates the Holladay Cinema 6 in Salt Lake City, the Tooele theater, three multiplexes in Logan, two in Cedar City and five in St. George — as well as theaters in Page, Ariz., Elko and Mesquite, Nev., and Montpelier, Idaho.

Rudman was a hands-on business owner. “He knew every nail, he knew every projector, he knew every sound system,” his son said. “He never missed a paycheck, never missed paying one of his employees.”

Rudman married Shirley Ernstsen in 1946, and they had two children: Shonnie Kay and Tony Jay. Shirley died in 1964.

Besides his children, Rudman is survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, his longtime companion Leone Clyde, and his only sibling, his brother Joseph Rudman.

A memorial service is set for 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, what would have been his 85th birthday, at the Holladay Cinema 6, 1945 E. Murray-Holladay Road (4795 South), Salt Lake City. A graveside service is scheduled for noon at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City.

“Critical consensus on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is overwhelmingly negative. But the critics are wrong. Micheal Bay used a squillion dollars and a hundred supercomputers’ worth of CG for a brilliant art movie about the illusory nature of plot.

Oh, and I would warn you that there’ll be spoilers in this review — except that, really, since I still have no idea what actually happened in this movie, I’m not sure how much I can spoil it.

Since the days of Un Chien Andalou and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari filmmakers have reached beyond meaning. But with this summer’s biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari’s cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I’m still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.

Transformers: ROTF has mostly gotten pretty hideous reviews, but that’s because people don’t understand that this isn’t a movie, in the conventional sense. It’s an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.”

Tucsonans have lost the DeAnza Drive-in, but Southern Arizonans still have alternatives available that will allow us to watch films under the stars. We can watch outdoor movies May through October, downtown at La Placita. Sometimes, though, we will have to travel a little for that opportunity to watch a movie, outside, in a group setting. This Friday, down in Tubac, one of these special opportunities will present itself in the form of a documentary about “The Sleeping Prophet”, titled: Edgar Cayce: The Beautiful Dreamer.

This 2004 documentary about Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) isn’t the newest film release, but it has proven to be popular among some Arizonans. Screenings for this film sold out more than a dozen times in Sedona. A sold out August screening in Tubac is the reason for this second showing on Friday. Directed by Darrah Meeley, the film earned rave reviews from Oscar winning directors Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) and Arthur Hiller (Love Story). The film won the “Most Thought Provoking Award” at the 2005 Sedona Film Festival. The film also won praise from Edgar Cayce’s son, Edgar Evans Cayce, who stated: “It is the best film ever made on my father.”

If you don’t know who Edgar Cayce was, he was an American clairvoyant and psychic. Dubbed “The Sleeping Prophet”, Cayce would lie down and enter into a sleep, or trance state to provide readings. The subjects for his readings were usually not present. Cayce generally provided readings in response to written requests. Most letters he received initially asked for health advice. However, readings soon evolved into advice about many things, including past lives, dream interpretation, and business advice. He also expanded into giving dietary advice. Among Cayce’s dietary recommendations: avoidance of red meat, no alcohol – except for red wine, and two or three almonds a day to keep cancer away. This description of Cayce only touches the surface of who he was. He was the most documented psychic of the 20th century.

Cayce’s predictions weren’t always right. In fact, he stated that his advice should be tested, rather than accepted as faith. With thousands of predictions made by Cayce – some made well into our future – we have yet to see if some will come true. Whether or not you believe in psychic phenomena, this documentary presents the life of a very interesting man whose life still fascinates many people today. The film begins at 7:30 pm at Tubac’s Cinema Under The Stars, on Friday. The cost is $5, with proceeds benefiting teen and young adult rehabilition programs.

Tubac’s weather forecast is clear for Friday evening, but weather predictions aren’t always right, are they? Still we will accept the forecast on faith. The folks at Tubac’s Cinema Under The Stars have secured an alternate location, indoors, just in case.

The films are shown at 7:30 p.m. every Thursday through October at La Placita Village on the southwest corner of Broadway and Church Avenue, Downtown.

Now in its 10th season, the film series will feature a Paul Newman favorite each month — one that the audience votes for.

June’s Newman movie of choice is “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” which won over “Hud.” The movie, starring Newman and Elizabeth Taylor, originally was released in 1958.

The June 11 feature film will be 1952′s classic “Singin’ in the Rain” with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor and Jean Hagen. And oh, yes — should it rain the day a movie is to be shown, call 326-5282 after 7 p.m. to find out if the movie has been canceled.

Making the rounds with me one Thanksgiving night, my friend T.J. found himself being educated by an old Armenian man who lectured him on African-American history.

Aram Gulezian, a gentleman and a scholar who died in March 2008 at the age of 101, was in top form on this holiday many years ago. He felt it his duty to inform the young black airman about such heroes as Paul Robeson, Marian Anderson and Marcus Garvey. When T.J. failed to recognize one of the names, my friend’s dad just about lost it.

“You don’t know squat about your people,” he announced, using a word that rhymes with wit. He promptly changed the subject back to genocide.

Although I still use that line on T.J. every time he fails to recognize the name of some third-rate rapper, a new documentary about Valentino made me realize I don’t know squat about my people, either.

“Valentino: The Last Emperor,” opening Friday at the Loft, tells the dramatic story of the Italian designer who became a fashion icon more than four decades ago. How could I have known so little about Valentino Garavani, one of the most influential gay men on the planet?

Granted, I’ve never paid much attention to haute couture or even ready-to-wear. But the movie is hardly about clothes, anyway. It’s about a singular man, now 77, who claims not to know anything else but how to make beautiful dresses for women. The co-star is Valentino’s co-star for nearly 50 years: Giancarlo Giammetti, his business and life partner and a man whose love and patience know no bounds.

The film centers on their relationship and also on a lavish celebration in Rome marking Valentino’s 45 years in fashion. The celebrity-rich event bathed the Colosseum in Valentino Red.

Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a special correspondent for Vanity Fair, the movie was culled from more than 250 hours of fly-on-the-wall footage. It captures the touching final act of a pop-culture giant. “Tyson” just got a lot sadder
Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is the subject of an acclaimed documentary opening June 26 at the Loft, 3233 E. Speedway.

The fighter’s 4-year-old daughter died Tuesday following an accident on the treadmill at his Phoenix home on Monday.

I don’t know whether little Exodus Tyson appears in the new film from director James Toback. But this sad news will add an unspoken layer of human drama to “Tyson.”

Cinema La Placita on Twitter
You probably know that Cinema La Placita features a classic movie on its outdoor screen every Thursday between now and October.

But did you know that you can get schedule updates, including rain cancellations, via Twitter?
Go to twitter.com/cinema laplacita and click “follow.”

Tonight’s movie, by the way, is “We’re No Angels” (1955), starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray. M. Scot’s a Twit, too

You can follow me on Twitter, but bear in mind that I’m a newbie, so my tweeting is still in twaining (twitter.com/ mscotskinner).

The highly anticipated grand openings signify a new way to throw a community event or backyard party by combining the fun of the Drive-In with the convenience of a mobile cinema for a fun-filled night of watching movies under the stars. With 21 locations already underway, Fun Flicks is looking for new licensees across the United States.

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) May 22, 2009 — The Fun Flicks Outdoor Movie Company is reporting they have had 13 successful grand openings in twelve different states since the start of the year. This brings the total of Fun Flick territories up to 21 different locations across the nation.

Fun Flicks provides event planners a unique way of ensuring their function is the talk of the town by offering outdoor movie equipment to rent for a fun-filled night of watching movies under the stars. Fun Flicks delivers a complete cinema with huge inflatable movie screens to schools, pools, neighborhoods, backyards, churches and parks and recreation departments. Utilizing the latest technologies, Fun Flicks has designed a system to offer quality service at half the price of competing companies – which helps save budgets during these current economic times.

The event planner simply provides the outdoor location and a movie, Fun Flicks does the rest by bringing a huge mobile inflatable movie screen, along with the projection and sound systems to entertain family and friend groups from 5 to 5,000.

The response has been overwhelming, with 10 states including Los Angeles, Austin & Phoenix opening up in less than 12 months.
Todd Severn, President of Fun Flicks, said: “One of the greatest joys we have experienced is the countless ‘thank yous’ we receive from parents, school officials, offices managers and event planners who have thrown the party of the year with Fun Flicks Outdoor Movies. We know we can’t duplicate that nostalgic era of the 50’s Drive-In, but we can sure bring some of its fun back, and we want you to contribute!”

Fun Flicks is offering licenses to entrepreneurs who want to start their own business in other cities and states. Similar to a franchise, Fun Flicks introduced its successful home-based business model in 2008 to entrepreneurs who want to own their own unique home business but are looking for a proven blueprint for success.

Severn said: “Fun Flicks offers entrepreneurs a proven, unique business opportunity and our licensees tell us how much fun they have running a business that helps people have fun by hosting outdoor movie events.”

The reason for the success of Fun Flicks licensees is how Fun Flicks supports its entrepreneurs. Each business owner has the option to complete an education program to learn the proven system. They are provided with custom ad design and a creative website. Business owners also have a network of other support under the Fun Flicks Brand umbrella.

Furthermore, each licensee receives unlimited customer leads from the top placement of advertising on Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL and other major search engines. Each approved licensee has a protected territory with absolutely no competition, making territories a premium.

The tour will begin its cross-country trek Friday.

Angela Berrigan, vice president of sales and marketing for the Grand Canyon Railway, said the arrival of the Disney train served as a perfect way to “celebrate train history and Disney’s spectacular high-tech sneak peek of the holiday movie.”

“The Grand Canyon Railway is thrilled to be the one and only stop in Arizona for the Disney ‘A Christmas Carol’ train tour,” Berrigan said. “Visitors will enjoy a grand day indeed, including the daily excitement fired up by the departure and arrival of the Grand Canyon Railway train to the Grand Canyon, plus the thrill and activities aboard the four-car Disney train’s interactive exhibits, green-screen technology and movie artifacts. The event footprint includes a 3-D theater and preview of the coming ‘A Christmas Carol’ film. Free parking is available on-property at Grand Canyon Railway with the Grand Depot Café and Spenser’s Pub offering ample and delicious options for on-site dining.”

According to promotion officials, the train will make its stop at the Grand Canyon Railway Depot for its three-day stay and offer a number of free exhibits for Arizona visitors. Williams Mayor John Moore will be on hand for a ribbon cutting May 29. Attractions for the stop includes behind-the-scenes movie exhibits, authentic artifacts from the Charles Dickens Museum of London, costumes and props from the new film and a sneak peak of the actual film thanks to an inflatable 3-D theater that will be erected on site for the event. Organizers plan to inflate the theater May 28. The depot itself will be decorated with Christmas décor, thousands of lights and will even host carolers for the event. Snow machines will also be used to blanket the area with snow.

Officials with Radio Disney will be on hand to ask kids to enter for a chance to become a local representative for their Movie Surfer segment. Hometown Movie Surfers will get a chance to appear on the Disney Channel by filming their own Movie Surfer segment. Kids can register to win the contest by going online to

You would think Erika O’Dowd dreams in black and white.

O’Dowd is the driving force behind Cinema La Placita, where black-and-white movies dominate each Thursday evening from early May through October.

Oh, O’Dowd loves movies, had parents who woke her up in the middle of the night because a movie with “the most beautiful woman in the world” (Audrey Hepburn, “Sabrina”) or a Ray Milland murder mystery was on TV.

But, curiously, showing movies is not the primary motivation for her weekly outdoor movie screenings on the plaza at La Placita Village, 110 S. Church Ave. Generally, she doesn’t even see much of the movies because she’s busy doling out popcorn or doing whatever needs to be done.

“My focus is more just finding a reason to get people together,” O’Dowd said. “I enjoy movies but I’m not the most well-versed person. My real interest was to create an event, a reason not to go home after work.”

This month launched the 10th season for O’Dowd’s nostalgic and quirky creation, which has created a firm subculture that averages 200 spectators and has drawn as many as 350, she says.

These Thursday night movies – “Cool Hand Luke” with Paul Newman at 7:30 p.m. May 14 – draw Cinema La Placita veterans and newcomers week after week.

“On any given night, 10 percent of the people are here for the first time,” O’Dowd said. “I can tell because they ask where’s the bathroom and how much is the popcorn. Ten percent say they’ve been coming since the beginning.”

Barbara McCale has been to a few Cinema La Placita screenings the past two seasons and last week brought Bill Palser for his first movie under the stars.

“I think it’s great that you can sit outside,” Palser says. “We went and got something to eat and then she said, ‘Let’s go see a movie.’ ”

Cinema La Placita offers plastic chairs, table seating and the lawn around the gazebo. McCale and Palser chose the chairs, but otherwise she’s been on the lawn.

“When I don’t bring him, I bring my dogs,” McCale says.

Palser delivered newspapers in the 1940s and remembers Speedway Boulevard and Swan Road as dirt roads. Black-and-white movies are fine by him.

“At least there is no computerized crap” Palser says.

Couples that started coming to the movies here as twosomes now bring elementary school children. Singles have met here and married – O’Dowd among them.

O’Dowd met Josh Pope at Cinema La Placita in the second season; they later married. Their daughter, Tulla, who is 2 1/2 years old, has been part of the La Placita scene since the cradle

O’Dowd describes Ken and Christi Friskey as the poster family for Cinema La Placita. They’ve been coming for nine seasons – before kids Dean, 8; Justin, 6; and Sagan, 5, were born.

“Even when we had newborn infants, we’d come with a stroller,” Ken Friskey says. “They’ve been coming here since they were days old.”

Christi Friskey says that sometimes her parents and grandparents join the family at La Placita Village to make a four-generation movie outing.

“Once you have kids, it’s hard to go to movie theaters,” Ken Friskey says. “This is a perfect venue for us.”

O’Dowd reveals the schedule only one month at a time because flexibility is both a necessity and a benefit. She needs to make sure chosen movies, mostly inexpensive rentals (hence the many B&W movies), are available. Rainouts can be rescheduled more easily and the open calendar allows her to schedule movies to coincide with current events.

“I did ‘Manchurian Candidate’ (Sinatra version) the same day Bush addressed the (Republican) convention in 2004,” she says. “We were able to show ’3:10 to Yuma’ (Glenn Ford version) the day before the remake came out.”

For a woman who largely shows black-and-white movies, O’Dowd’s favorites list is slightly more contemporary and mostly color: “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Notorious,” “Manhattan,” “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance.”

If you see “Rosemary’s Baby” in the lineup, know that you’re getting an O’Dowd personal favorite.

“I have a huge crush on Cary Grant,” she says. “I have a big crush on Audrey Hepburn. I get a lot of input from the audience. If it’s available and not too expensive, I try to fit that in.”

Scheduling only one month ahead also allows people willing to donate $500 to sponsor a movie screening of their choice.

“If somebody calls me and says, ‘Our anniversary is June 28,’ great,” says O’Dowd, adding that for $500 that couple can choose the movie to celebrate with.

O’Dowd tries to fit a theme or two in each year. This season she plans to show a Paul Newman movie each month and perhaps a movie from 1929, 1939, 1949, 1959, 1969, 1979 “but not 1989.” “China Syndrome” and “Kramer vs. Kramer” are the 1979 candidates.

Cinema La Placita started in 2000 while O’Dowd was marketing director at La Placita and her boss, La Placita director Jane McCollum (now the force behind Main Gate Square) told O’Dowd to come up with a weekly event.

The first two seasons were funded with a $24,000 city Downtown Projects grant. Since then, funding has been a challenge, but O’Dowd never gave up: “I guess I’m a little stubborn.”

Admission is free, but the suggested $3 donation to see a movie bridges the gap between the roughly $10,000 this season will cost and the $4,000 in sponsorships from Bourn Partners (owners of La Placita Village), Betts Printing, Twice as Nice and individual movie sponsors.

“I need everybody to give me $3,” she says. “If everybody gave me $3, we’d be set. The event costs about $650 a night.”

The sponsorships in the past were as high as $6,500. O’Dowd reined in the budget from $12,000 and pared down the paid staff to the projectionist. Paid staff in the past set up and put away chairs, but this year O’Dowd is calling on movie attendees to show up early and stick around to help with chairs and cleanup.

Larger donations count as going to a nonprofit because Cinema La Placita is a program of the Cultural Exchange Council.
