Happy Halloween from Open Air Cinema!

Official Movie Trailer for Twilight, one of the films that made the Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies list.

We hope everyone has had a great Halloween weekend, especially as you have been screening your favorite scary flick on your Open Air Cinema outdoor movie system! We have enjoyed reviewing the our list of Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies, and are glad to hear that many of you have made the outdoor projection of a Halloween movie the centerpiece of your annual spooky party!

Remember these items if you are producing an outdoor movie event for tonight’s festivities:

  • Bring plenty of blankets! They provide the needed cushion for sitting on the ground, as well as an additional layer of warmth if you are in an area of the country that experiences cold temperatures this time of year.
  • Provide refreshments to keep your guests warm and filled (movies are always better with something to munch on!) For Halloween, we suggest hot apple cider or cocoa (you could dye the cider blood red!), warm cookies (try sugar cookies with spooky designs!), and seasonal candy (candy corn, gummy creepy crawlers, etc). Or, as we’ve suggested before, popcorn with creepy plastic bugs planted througout!  Imagine the reaction of your guests when they grab a handful of popcorn, and pull out a disgusting spider or cockroach!
  • Have fold-able camping chairs handy for the elderly members of your community or social circle who may not be comfortable sitting on the ground.
  • Test your equipment ahead of time, so you can make sure everything is in working order before everyone shows up. Fire up your outdoor projector, and inflate your screen, as you’ll quickly see if anything is not working properly.
  • Set up your outdoor air screen ahead of time.  The last thing you want to be doing when everyone arrives is fiddling with the screen or un-tangling your cables.  Setting up early will allow you to enjoy the company of your guests before the movie starts.

Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies: Jaws

One of the final films on our Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies list is Jaws, the 1975 thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley’s wildly successful novel of the same name. Jaws is a great selection for your annual Halloween outdoor movie party, but before we tell you why, here is the theatrical release trailer for the film:

In Jaws, Roy Scheider stars as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as marine biologist Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the Mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brody’s wife, Ellen. After a young 23 year old goes missing, it is determined that she was killed by a shark, and Hooper wants to close the beach in order to protect vacationers from the deadly predator. But his decision is overturned by the city council, and Jaws continues in a fast-paced thriller that will bring the spirit of Halloween to your annual party!

JawsJaws presents some great opportunities to make your outdoor movie screen event memorable for your guests or family. Specializing the setting for your outdoor movie always makes for a great experience, so if you are in a boating community, this movie is for you! We’ve seen a number of Open Air Cinema customers who have produced beach-side screenings, where they’ve set up their pro or elite screen right on the sand!

JawsWe’ve also seen boat drive in setups, where the audience will watch an outdoor screen movie from their individual boats, listening to the sound through their radio transmitters. This requires the event producer to get a powerful transmitter that will produce a strong enough signal so everyone can hear the audio loud and clear. If you are unfamiliar with such transmitters, fell free to contact us at Open Air Cinema, and we’d be happy to explain more!

Also, don’t forget the refreshments! Bringing a few snacks for your audience will significantly add to their outdoor movie experience. And if you’re screening Jaws for your Halloween event, apple cider and candied apples would make great refreshments.

If you are interested in investing in an air screen for your next community get-together, contact us today, and we’ll get right back with you! Happy Halloween!

The film features a star-studded cast with Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, along with Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones, and Sylvia Sidney in supporting roles. Beetlejuice is a great choice for your annual Halloween outdoor movie party, and is appropriate for the entire family. Here is the theatrical release trailer for the movie:

Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam (Alec Baldwin) Maitland go on a vacation to decorate their beautiful country home. They consult the “Handbook for the Recently Deceased”, and confirm their suspicion to be true. Adam leaves the house in disbelief, but finds himself in an otherworldly place called Saturn, a strange dimension covered in sand and populated with giant worms.

BeetlejuiceWhen they return to their home for refuge, their house is sold to a new family from City, the Deetzes, which includes Charles (Jeffrey Jones), aspiring sculptor and Charles’ second wife Delia (Catherine O’Hara), and Charles’ goth daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) from his first marriage. The Deetzes redecorate the idyllic home with a modern pastel theme that drives the Maitlands nuts! They learn that they must stay in the house for 125 years, and that if they want the Deetzes to leave they’ll need to scare them out! So they hire Beetlejuice, a bio-exorcist who scares the living, for a living. But things turn crazy and eventually the Deetzes and the Maitlands want him out.

The Excorcist tells the story of Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), an actress in , Washington D.C., and the strange behavior of her 12 year old daughter Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair). Her behaviors include seizures, unnatural powers such as levitation and great strength, and cursing and blaspheming in the voice of a male demon. As Chris is worried about Regan, she takes her to a doctor, who initially suspects the activity is caused by a brain lesion.

the exorcistBut after a number of tests, she is found to be okay, and the physician recommends that Regan see a psychiatrist. But after the psychiatrist is assaulted, and the director to Chris’s film is murdered outside their apartment, the doctor finally recommends an exorcism, claiming that if Regan’s behavior is psychosomatic, she’ll respond to it positively.

Outdoor Movie Idea: Get Low (Robert Duvall)

Get Low is a film based on a true story that took place in in the year 1938, and stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black, Gerald McRaney, Bill Cobbs, Andrea Powell, Rebecca Grant, Scott Cooper, and Chandler Riggs.  The film would make a great selection for your next backyard-cinema event, as you invite your friends and family over for a movie under the stars.  Get Low is probably not entertaining enough for small children, but is a perfect film for those who appreciate well-made cinema. Here is the official trailer for the film:

Get Low follows Robert Duvall as Felix Bush, a hermit who lives deep in the backwoods of Tennessee.  There are many local legends about Felix Bush, some which seem to be well-founded, and others that appear to be tall-tales.  Nearing the end of his life, Bush wants to throw his own funeral party before his death, and wishes that his guests share stories, good or bad, about himself.

outdoor moviesThe old man works on gathering hundreds of folks from all around, and offers to give his land away upon his death if attendees pay a 5 dollar donation to attend the funeral.  But Bush has his own agenda, and desires to come clean before all in explaining what really happened in a tragic circumstance decades earlier.

outdoor moviesGet Low is ultimately a film about redemption, forgiveness, and the significance of those personal relationships that tie us together as human beings.  The film is slow-paced and easy going, and definitely reflects the way of life that the region held in the early 1900′s.  Get Low is a beautiful regionalist film, and gives the viewer a glimpse into an era and time that was not so long ago.  It begs one to question their personal relationships, and the wedges that might be dividing an individual, family, or community.

We highly recommend this film for your next backyard-movie event. You won’t be disappointed!

Outdoor Movie Idea: Bedknobs and Broomsticks

The 1971 musical film/ animation Bedknobs and Broomsticks makes a great selection for your next outdoor movie – whether you’re inviting thousands of community members to your local park, or simply having an evening with family or friends right in your own backyard.  The film mixes animation and live recording, and so will make a bold bright image that will look clean and really great on your outdoor movie screen.  The film stars Angela Lansbury , David Tomlinson, Roddy McDowall, Cindy O’Callaghan, Roy Snart, and Ian Weighill among others. Bedknobs and Broomsticks has enchanted generations of children, and will bring magic and joy to your community today!  Here’s a short trailer for the film:

1940′s was significantly affected by the War, and most of the young men were sent off to fight. Eglantine Price (Angela Lansbury) wants to help in the war effort, particularly in protecting , and so she enrolls in witchcraft school in order to learn a spell or two! Against her will, she is assigned to three young children from who have escaped the blitz bombing, who quickly discover her witchcraft and threaten to tell.

outdoor moviesIn a swap for their silence, Price casts a spell on a bedknob of an old bed, causing it to take the bed-traveler wherever they want, imaginary or real! But she has her own agenda, as she is seeking a special spell called “substitutiary locomotion” that makes inanimate objects move on their own accord. The group set out on a fun-filled journey full of suspense and action that will keep your entire community entertained, and will bring back old memories to those parents who loved this movie as children.

outdoor moviesEven though most of your community members have likely seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks before (and probably really love it), experiencing the film on the big screen is an opportunity many have never had. If anyone has screened Bedknobs and Broomsticks as an outdoor movie, tell us your story by posting to the comments section below. We’d love to hear your story!

Outdoor Movie Idea: Days of Thunder

A great pick for your next outdoor movie is Days of Thunder, the 1990 Paramount film about NASCAR racing starring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes and Michael Rooker. The film is a great movie for the entire family, and would draw out many people from your community if NASCAR is popular in your area! Earlier this year, the film was screened with the aid of Open Air Entertainment before a NASCAR race at the Toyota Speedway in , . Here is the theatrical release trailer for Days of Thunder.

Days of Thunder follows Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise), an aspiring race-car driver who hopes to someday race in NASCAR. Tim Daland (Randy Quaid), a wealthy NASCAR team owner, sees Trickle race, and believes he has the potential for greatness. Daland convinces Harry (Robert Duval), a retired racing coach, to watch Trickle during a test lap. Trickle beats the current NASCAR champion, Rowdy Burn, with his own car, to get the fastest test lap of the day.

Harry agrees to come out of retirement, as he also believes Trickle has great potential. But Trickle has a long way to go, and he doesn’t do so well in his first few races. But with help from Harry, he’s soon at the front of the pack – at least until a massive crash gets him and Burn injured to the point of needing rehabilitation. Days of Thunder continues in an action-packed narrative that will entertain your entire community, especially if they are NASCAR fans!

As we noted above, Open Air Entertainment screened Days of Thunder at the Toyota Speedway in Los Angeles earlier this year. Here are a few images from their event:

Foreign Outdoor Movie Idea: North Face (Nordwand)

We recently watched The North Face (Nordwand in German), a foreign German film based on the true story of the 1936 attempt to summit the Eiger North Face in the , and thought we’d pass it along as a great pick for your next backyard movie! The film probably isn’t the best choice if you have small children, but would make a great date night outdoor movie or an opportunity to invite friends over who love foreign or independent films. North Face would look gorgeous on an Open Air Cinema 16′ Pro System with an HD audio-visual package. Here is the theatrical release trailer for North Face:

North Face follows Andreas Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas) and Toni Kurz (Benno Fürmann), two Bavarian Nazi soldiers who are unsympathetic to the party, and are much more interested in mountain climbing than they are serving the interests of the party. Two other Bavarian climbers, Karl Mehringer and Max Sedlmeyer, attempted to climb the Eiger North Face in the Swiss Alps, the last unconquered challenge of the Alps, but died while attempting to summit. Being billed as an opportunity of national heroism, word quickly spread of ’s desire to ascend the North Face before any other nation.

outdoor moviesHowever, Kurz and Hinterstoisser are weary of attempting the climb, as they know of the serious risks that it poses. Yet when the army becomes even less fulfilling, they decide to drop out and attempt the Eiger North Face, also known as the “death wall”. The film follows the duo as they travel to Switzerland by bike, and their attempt to reach the summit. They are not without competition however, as their Austrian counterparts Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer are hoping to declare victory for their homeland. But when events turn the climb into a deathly situation, the four work together to survive.

outdoor moviesNorth Face is a well made film, and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat! The actors deliver first-rate performances, and show a glimpse into a time of great unrest in Europe. At first we were uneasy of the film, and weren’t sure if it would transcend the vast groups of movies made about the era. But North Faceexceeded all our expectations, and we give it a five-star rating as a potential outdoor-movie!

Outdoor Movie Idea: How to Train Your Dragon

The DreamWorks Animation film How to Train Your Dragon would make a great selection for your next outdoor movie screening! Outside of the Shrek series, the film is DreamWork’s most successful animation to date. It has already become a favorite of children everywhere, and so screening it under the stars with your Open Air Cinema Elite System would guarantee a large turnout – and would tell your community that you are up on what’s cool. Alternatively, How to Train Your Dragon is a perfect choice for a backyard cinema screening on your OAC Home System with your family, as it is a movie the entire family will enjoy. And if you have the resources, why not screen the animation in 3D as an outdoor movie, as was done in earlier this year with Monsters vs. Aliens! Here is the theatrical release trailer for the film:

How to Train Your Dragon is set in a mythical Viking world where the young teenager named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel) is on a quest to achieve acceptance as a Viking warrior. Hiccup’s tribe finds value in strong dragon slayers, and so the young viking sets out to capture his own dragon in order to impress his tribe (and a young viking girl). Hiccup captures a dragon, but is uneasy about killing it, and so decides instead to befriend it and let it live.

Outdoor MoviesThrough his new friendship, Hiccup realizes that his people’s perspective and relationship to the dragons may be entirely wrong – that they may be able to understand the dragons in a different way. But his forward-thinking views aren’t shared by the members of his tribe, and so Hiccup finds himself caught between the traditions of his people, and a group of dragons that he has grown to love an appreciate.

outdoor moviesThe film is fun and endearing, and promotes values of appreciation and equality that are powerful messages for your community. How to Train Your Dragon is a great pick for a Halloween movie for the month of October, and would provide some great opportunities for costume contests, concessions, and other activities that would further solidify the theme of the event, and would galvanize your community in significant ways. Overall, we give How to Train your Dragon a Five-Star rating as potential as an Outdoor Movie – this movie would really rock under the stars!
