Planning Your Outdoor Movie Event

Open Air Cinema Outdoor Movies

Planning an Outdoor Movie Event can seem daunting, especially if you are new to backyard cinema. But with these few tips, you’ll be on your way to an easy setup that you’ll be able to replicate time after time.  First, here are a few questions that will help you get prepared for the outdoor movie event!

  • How many people will be attending?
  • What movie will you be watching?
  • If you are screening the movie in public, do you have the proper licensing to do so?
  • Where will you hold your event?

These are a few basic questions, and if you know the answers to them, you’ll be able to produce an outdoor movie event that will be a lasting memory for your guests.  Knowing how many individuals will be attending your event will affect a few key aspects of your setup.  If you have a significant number of guests, you’ll want to make sure you have a big enough sound system, and will want to choose a location where your guests can spread out and be comfortable.

Open Air Cinema Baseball Outdoor MovieChoosing an appropriate film for your audience is an important step in the outdoor movie planning process.  Of course, make sure your film is age appropriate, but also choose a flick that is relevant to your community.  Screening Twilight at your local rest home won’t be as effective or enjoyable as say, Singing in the Rain, or the Maltese Falcon (and visa versa). Take advantage of the season and holidays as well – screen a horror flick around halloween, or a patriotic film around the fourth of July! If you’re short on ideas, check out our Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time, and our Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies lists! You’ll be sure to find something that will make your event wildly successful.

If your event is open to the public, you’ll need to make sure to obtain licensing do to so.  Most film licensing can be obtained through Swank Motion Picture Inc. or Criterion.  Swank tends to carry more recent films, while Criterion carries more classics, although you’ll be surprised about where you obtain the licensing for certain films.  Pricing varies with the film, audience size and type, and sometimes time of year.  Plan this well in advance, and you’ll have no problems!

Waterpark Outdoor MovieChoosing where to hold your outdoor movie event is a very important step in the planning process.  The great thing about Open Air Cinema inflatable screens is that they are portable and easy to set up.  With your portable projection screen, you can set up your event on a beach, in a park, in your own backyard, on a mountaintop – virtually anywhere! The more imaginative your location, the more magical your event will be.  Planning your location around your film selection is a great way to thematize the entire evening – something that will heighten the fun factor considerably!

We realize that these are just a few tips to get you started in planning your outdoor movie event.  We’ll be writing much more about how to maintain your outdoor movie projector, keep your air screen it tip-top shape, and more fun ideas about how and where to setup your outdoor movie system.

Home Toys Reviews Open Air Cinema Outdoor Movie Equipment!

Home Toys recently posted a great review of Open Air Cinema Outdoor Movie Equipment:

When you think of a backyard barbeque, thoughts of grilling a smoky slab of meat while surrounded by family and friends might come to mind. For the history of backyard gatherings, that’s pretty much been the gist of it…but not any more. There is a new movement afoot that will forever change the way you see your backyard. It’s more than a soccer field, it’s more than a cool place to get together on a summer’s night, with Open Air Cinema the backyard can become a giant, outdoor movie theater!

Open Air Cinema is the world’s leader in producing outdoor cinema equipment. It has a line of inflatable movie screens that are perfect for families and neighbors to use in the backyard, poolside or in the neighborhood park.
The drive-in theater might be all but extinct, but the mystique of the experience a drive-in theater brought doesn’t need to disappear. Open Air Cinema has a whole new way to enjoy the thrills and fun of movies under the stars with its CineBox™ Home backyard theater system. It comes equipped with everything you need for a backyard movie event. CineBox includes a 9X5, 12X7 or 16X9-foot inflatable screen (which is the largest screen recommended for home use), as well as a projector, DVD player, sound mixers, and speakers.

The portable nature of the system makes it perfect for families because they can take it anywhere. In fact, Open Air Cinema has participated in humanitarian efforts throughout Africa where users would plug the system into a generator and BAM, they have instant movie-magic.

Backyard movie enthusiasts have long used everything from bed sheets and garage doors to make this happen, but these new inflatable movie screens have theater-quality projection surfaces and are so easy to use it’s a no-brainer. They take about 30 seconds to inflate—secure them with the tethers and you’re good to go.

Plan for Fun
While there is something to be said about being spontaneous, the best backyard events sometimes need a little planning. Here are some tips on how to make your next outdoor movie event a blast.

  • Pick your place: If it’s going to be a family gathering, the backyard is great, if you want to widen the circle a bit, think about moving it to a cul-de-sac for a block-party or to a park or the beach!
  • Choose the entertainment: Deciding what movie would be best is a critical choice—will it be a family movie, romantic comedy or action/adventure blockbuster? The key is choosing a movie that most people will enjoy. OR, ditch the movie idea altogether—plug in your game console and stage an alien-blasting fiesta!
  • Select the menu: Outdoor movies and food go hand in hand. There is nothing more classic than hamburgers and hotdogs, but for the movie, don’t forget the popcorn!
  • Consider a theme: Having a theme can tie the entire evening together for an unforgettable experience. Take the screen to the local baseball field and watch “Field of Dreams.” Dress in pirate costumes and watch a pirate movie. Have a luau and watch “Blue Hawaii.” Also, remember it doesn’t have to be a movie. You can have a sports theme night and watch the championship game on the giant screen.

Backyard cinema can be as relaxing or as exciting as you want. It’s that flexibility that makes movies under the stars so memorable and special for the whole family.

PRIZE: Open Air Cinema Pro 16’ screen

ABOUT RANDALL’S PHOTOGRAPH:

’s Longest running “open air” Movies series. Started in May of 2009.

“We all enjoy the “open air” cinemas during the summer season, but we wanted to take it a little further based on the not just the economy but really giving back to the community. So we created the longest running movies series in Atlanta last year – 26 weeks of Movies! Hosting anywhere from 200 – 600 people per week.

Our Regal Cinema has also joined as we show sequels and they give movie posters, passes and other promotional items, gifts and games away

Held at Atlantic Station in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, in cooperation with Jones Lang LaSalle, the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces and the Atlantic Station Civic Association along with the Neighborhood Association, make it happen each week. Its about bringing the Community together and helping neighbors and friends reconnect.

Our series is called Movies and the Market, because we added to our event a little open air market. We have a group of artist that set-up every week also, to sell their artwork, jewelry and unusual items. this helps off-set the cost of the movies each week. As the popcorn, and movies are FREE to everyone.

The program runs every Thursday night, and in some cases like Harry Potter we showed the entire series up to the newest release, so we had four movies that week.

Each week, we have a line of people asking about our screen, equipment and if we can do it in their neighborhood, back yard, work function – you name it. We are very proud to work with Open Air Cinema and the equipment has be used weekly now, and it has become a main stay our on year MUST DO.”

The CineBox Goes for a Spin in Kenya

Open Air Cinema’s founder, Stuart Farmer, has been spotted in some of the latest footage coming from the Field of Dreams project in . In the first few seconds of the clip Stuart is seen sending off a tuk tuk on rounds through the village to promote the evening screenings.

As the auto-rickshaw rolls away you can see the ingenious PA system that Stuart had built out of CineBox components. You’ll also notice a full-size generator had to be mounted on the back to power the system.

Open Air Cinema in Kenya: Taking Notes and Changing Venues

FIFA World Cup Outdoor Screenings in Kilifi, KenyaI was talking to a man as I flipped through pictures on my laptop. He noticed a landscape picture all in white and asked me what it was. “Snow,” I said, and he just stared in astonishment. As we flipped through pictures of Switzerland in winter we talked of skiing and sledding and hiking in snow up to your knees. He was amazed. We talked about what cars do in the snow, and how trains were better in snow than cars. I guess town doesn’t have winter blizzards…

Today was the first day where I gave full control over to the girls. I have picked two leaders among them, Salma and Grace, and they know what to do. They are responsible and serious about the opportunity to manage open air cinema events for the next couple years. They carry notepads with them and stop frequently to take determined notes. Today I found them kneeling next to the generator sketching out the schema of electrical cords. I had talked to them earlier about the way which we lay the extension cords. We make sure to keep the power for the audio on one circuit, and the projection power on another. Audio can surge and boom, depending on the signal. It can trip circuits because its can be unpredictable. If an audio powerline surges too much and trips the circuit, the projector will not lose electricity, which is bad. Like end of the world bad. Or at least I make it sound that way (projector bulbs are expensive and far away from ). I’ve explained this all to Grace and Salma and they’re doing their best to remember because this weekend there will be a written test about everything under the outdoor cinema sun.

Tonight we moved fields to Bukungu Stadium, in central Killifi. Its a big open soccer field with public bathrooms, which apparently is enough to dub it a Stadium. The girls a doing a great job talking to the audiences. Its fun to hand them the microphone and encourage them to be confidently loud, playful, polite, and professional all at the same time. They speak in their local vernacular. With lots of Karibu’s and Asanti-sanna’s (welcome’s and thank you’s).

Open Air Cinema in Kenya: Audio-Visual Training

Open Air Cinema Training in Kilifi, KenyaI get a good laugh from being corrected by my students; a feel-good-surprised type of laugh. Its a good sign that they are listening, interested, and know something extra about what you are teaching.

It happened today, just after I started the audio/visual training about eight Kenyan girls from the surrounding villages. As I was teaching them about audio signals and XLR cables etc. I held up an end of XLR cable and was about to plug it into the loudspeaker. One of the girls informed me that in fact “this end of the audio cable, is the male end, and sends the sound, so actually Mr. Stuart, you plug this one into your speaker,” and handed me the other end of the cable.  I laughed with delight.

It reminds me of another training we conducted in Africa about two years back. I was in Nduta UN Refugee Camp on the border of Burundi and Rwanda and we were training locals how to inflate a giant inflatable screen and how to securely tie and anchor it. A tall Congolese fisherman smiled at me, grabbed the rope from my hand, and tied a sliding clove hitch around the stake with ease.  Everyone here on the coast already know their knots, which makes my job a little bit easier.

The girls were happy with the training. They liked using the audio mixer to blend the music, movie, and microphone sounds.  The touch screen on the iPad was mesmerizing for them and they gathered around it in amazement. They intuitively got the hang of the iPad applications, particularly Google Earth which was obviously their favorite. With a few finger gestures they zoomed around the map of coastal .

Tomorrow is the inflatable screen training and our first event. The students assured me they would all be there. My expectations aren’t too high though on the first event day. First trainings usually just involve an introduction to the inflatable movie screen, because typically, nobody’s ever even seen one before.

Open Air Cinema in Kenya: The First Day in Kilifi

Moving the Goalposts in KenyaThe Field of Dreams team has landed and all volunteers and staff are now assembling in .

This morning is one of those excited mornings. One you wish you had every day. Its the kind of morning where you wake up in an instant and energetically step out your door to explore at 6am. The unusual combination of jetlag combined with the novelty of being in a new place.

Before I headed to the project office, I went out for a walk along the beach looking onto the Kilifi river joining the Indian Ocean. Gold light burst onto the rippling gently moving river. The fisherman were standing in their canoes, quietly throwing their nets into the water. Clouds of tiny fish burst from the surface in every direction, as a larger fish had apparently attacked and stirred everything underneath.

I met Harshad after breakfast and headed to the MTG office. We walked along foot paths and tall grass to a large white two story building surrounded by a fence, security, and various huts.

I was greeted warmly by the staff and employees. I met Cokie, an amazing Dutch woman, who came to as a volunteer 5 years ago and decided to stay. She introduced me to the staff and volunteers. I met Josephine from Nairobi, a volunteer from Safaricom, a national cell phone company. The national cell phone company. She came for a 3 month stretch to help support MTG. Everyone seems friendly and busy at work running a region-wide soccer program.

The director is not in today. But I’m told she’s British and lives here locally with her family and three children. Harshad’s first wave of volunteers are in the main classroom discussing the hour-by-hour teaching timeline for the next week. They are a talented and devoted crew. All from the BBC. Each has taken their personal time off to help out.

I left them to begin my own timeline for the World Cup screenings. First thing is to sort out the equipment and inspect that all pieces have arrived safely. The day is spent sorting through the Open Air Cinema CineBox system. The next step is basic audio visual training, scheduled for tomorrow.

Open Air Cinema in Kenya: Arrival on the Coast

Outdoor Screenings of FIFA World Cup in KenyaI have finally arrived in Africa for a 3 week visit, and have just completed an eight hour drive from Nairobi, to the coast. I’m told this road, which connects Nairobi to Mombassa, is one of the most accident prone roads in Africa, due to truck laden traffic connecting the port of Mombassa (the largest port in east africa) to , Uganda, DRCongo, Burundi, Rwanda, etc. It was exhilarating to watch the savvy driver weave back and forth into oncoming traffic, with only moments separating us between life and death. Hand waving, headlight flashes, and adjustments for passing cars are the languages of the road. I’m reminded of a luxury I didn’t appreciate up till now, 4 lane highways… Also, as we passed a pack of baboons standing by the freeway, Nicolas, the driver, looked at me seriously and explained how dangerous they are. He said, like groups of people, a group of baboons can quickly kill if they happen to stage an attack :)

I’m staying at hotel akin to a colonial resort. It’s a giant plantation-like resort with rooms along the lush green cliffsides, overlooking a river flowing into the Indian Ocean. It has pools, thatched roof huts, open air restaurants, and too many employees. We are surrounded by small villages and vans that reek of pollution. Open Air is delivering a system to a region wide girls soccer organization. I walked through the light morning rain and tall grass to tall white building staffed by locals and a devouted 40 year old Dutch woman who has lived her for 5 years managing a large girls soccer program. She operates an all woman organization and has 20 girls working for her in administration. In dutch fashion, she rides her bike wherever she goes. As she rolled up one of her pant legs before she stepped on her bike, she explained a Dutch person isn’t Dutch without a bike.

On the way this morning to begin work, I walked with Harshad, a scrappy British BBC employee who Google funded to boost her program. He is the one who bought our outdoor cinema system. His brief project will contribute two months of technology classes, health classes, and nighttime world cup soccer entertainment for the girls and community at large. We will be traveling to 6 different locations within 4 hours from here. I will help train the local girls on how to run the outdoor cinema system. They will keep it and use it for years to come.

Open Air Cinema is Going Back to Africa

It’s been a few years, but Open Air Cinema is going back to Africa!

This time Open Air Cinema legend Stuart Farmer will be taking a full-sized 16′ CineBox Pro with him in coach. Yep, the whole system – speakers and all – is being checked on the plane all the way to Nairobi. It will be a tight squeeze, but the CineBox Pro 16 is portable enough to make it possible.

Stuart and the CineBox system are bound for , on ’s eastern coast. There he will join Google and the Field of Dreams project in their effort to screen the FIFA World Cup in local villages. With the help of several Google employees, workshops will be organized to instruct local students in information technologies. Stuart’s role will be to train a handful of female footballers how to set up the open air cinema system. With this young team of OAC-trained technicians in Kenya, the outdoor cinema system will benefit the community for years to come.

Watch this space over the next couple of weeks to follow Stuart on his cinema safari through the wilds of Kenya. Until then, Jambo Bwana!

Whether you are in the final planning stages of organizing the next edition of your long-time Summer outdoor movie series, or if you are planning your very first event, there are a lot of steps to remember! One of the most important steps in the planning of your event is to arrange film licensing in order to make sure you hold a legal screening. There are a couple companies that make this step easy: Swank (80% of titles) and Criterion (often more classic titles).

If you are a school, non-profit foundation, municipality, or charity, there is often special pricing. Just about every movie is available for screening, and the latest flicks are always available and are sure to draw a crowd!

We just checked out some of the latest selection of new movies available (or about to be available) for screening, and we are more excited than ever about this year’s outdoor movie events. Titles such as The Twilight Saga, Alice in Wonderland, The Princess and The Frog, Where the Wild Things Are, and How to Train Your Dragon are sure to be big hits in outdoor movie events everywhere this year!

We’ll soon be populating this blog with movie ideas for the 2010 outdoor movie season. Is there a movie you think will be a big hit this year? Salt Lake City, Utah: Open Air Cinema hosts Outdoor Movie at NRPA Convention

This past Wednesday, Open Air Cinema and Swank Motion Pictures hosted a free screening of Transformers 2 at the National Parks and Recreation Association (NRPA) national congress in , .  The screening was a blast, and everyone really enjoyed watching the movie on the huge 30′ screen. It was really great because everyone was able to see the screening on a brand-new system.  The sound was amazing, and the projection was stunning.  National Parks and Recreation administrators from all over the place came to see the screening: , , Utah, , , , , , , , and many other places.  Here is an excerpt of a review from io9:

“Critical consensus on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is overwhelmingly negative. But the critics are wrong. Micheal Bay used a squillion dollars and a hundred supercomputers’ worth of CG for a brilliant art movie about the illusory nature of plot.

Oh, and I would warn you that there’ll be spoilers in this review — except that, really, since I still have no idea what actually happened in this movie, I’m not sure how much I can spoil it.

Since the days of Un Chien Andalou and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari filmmakers have reached beyond meaning. But with this summer’s biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari’s cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I’m still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.

Transformers: ROTF has mostly gotten pretty hideous reviews, but that’s because people don’t understand that this isn’t a movie, in the conventional sense. It’s an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.”

Frankenheim, Germany: Kino Unter Freiem – Frankenheim Open Air Kino

Frankenheim Open Air Kino

Open Air Kino

Also Filmwahl – kein großes Thema!

„Ach so!“

Donnerwetter! Was dort alles angeboten wurde!

Was den Jungs unterwegs so alles passierte!

Was gibt’s denn noch? Mal seh’n …
