Earlier this year, experienced their hottest summer for 8 years. While the Northern Hemisphere was bundling up in scarves and sweaters, closed schools and sent workers home early to escape the heat. That’s why Whittlesea Swim Centre featured a Dive-In outdoor movie night at the pool. It was a perfect opportunity to cool off and watch a great movie under the stars. Friends and families piled around the pool to watch “Hancock,” while kids and adults alike floated in the pool. More than 300 people attended the outdoor cinema screenings, a record attendance compared with previous years of movie nights, evidence of the extreme heat. The film was shown on a giant inflatable screen set up at one end of the pool. Movie-goers expressed their gratitude for the outdoor movie event, and said they would like more screenings in the future, regardless of the record temperatures. Now that it is winter in the lower hemisphere you may not see many open air cinema screenings (except perhaps at some more permanent locations, like Deckchair Cinema or St. George Open Air Cinema), but next summer expect plenty of movies under the stars, no matter how hot it is.

Fayetteville, Arkansas: Fayetteville Adds Another Dive-In Movie

Public Pools Feature Dive-In Movies

Outdoor Movies in Rayetteville, ArkansasThe aquatic parks in Springdale and Prairie Grove are open for swimmers and ’s Wilson Park Pool is opening Saturday.

All three of the county’s outdoor public pools are offering four separate Red Cross learn-to-swim classes for school-age children, officials said.

Springdale Aquatic Center opens for the season beginning today after opening over the past two weekends.

“It was great this past weekend. We had over 500 people both days,” John Marshall, Springdale aquatics director, said.

The pool is open daily through the Labor Day weekend.

The admission prices are the same as last year: $2 for age 4 and younger and $3 for age 5 and older, he said.

Pool hours are noon until 6:45 p.m. daily, except for Sunday when the pool opens at 1 p.m. The pool is available for private parties after hours, he said.

Springdale does not offer season passes, but swimmers can get 20 percent off the admission price by purchasing discount ticket books.

The Springdale Aquatic Center opened in 2000. It has both 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, eight floating toys, two large water slides, two basketball goals, water tumble buckets and two youth slides, he said.
Busy in Prairie Grove

Prairie Grove Aquatic Park began its regular operating season Saturday, after having been open for Memorial Day weekend.

Kecia Grigson, pool manager, said Monday the staff was busy selling lots of season passes and signing up kids for swimming lessons, after a busy weekend.

“We were very, very busy. Hopefully that’s how the season will be,” she said. “Memorial Day was bad because it was rainy and cold.”

The Prairie Grove Aquatic Park opened in July 2001 and is the only municipal pool in Washington County outside of Springdale and Fayetteville. Grigson said the pool draws swimmers from Prairie Grove, Farmington, Lincoln, Fayetteville and northeast Oklahoma

“Everything has gone real smooth this year,” she said.

The price of admission is $4 for age 6 and older and $3 for 5 and younger and seniors age 55 and older. Season passes are $60 for individuals and $185 for a family of four and $35 for each additional member.

The pool is open daily through Aug. 16, the Sunday before the first week of school.

Pool hours are noon to 6 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Fayetteville adds third dive-in movie

The cost of admission and season tickets is less at Fayetteville’s Wilson Park Pool than at the newer facilities in Springdale and Prairie Grove. The daily admission price is $2 for adults and $1 for children in Fayetteville.

Season passes are $30 for youth, $50 for adults and $85 for families. The pool is open daily except for Mondays from June 6 until Aug. 16.

Pool hours are 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The pool is open Tuesday through Friday for adult lap swimming from noon until 1 p.m. with open swim from 1 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. Adult lap swim and swimming lessons are from 5:30 p.m. until 6:50 p.m. with family swim from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to another summer over there. We’ve added an additional dive-in movie this year,” Tiffany Gaulke, Fayetteville recreation program manager, said.

The pool offers free “dive-in” movies — scheduled for June 26 and July 10 and 24 beginning at dark. Movies are shown on an inflatable screen and swimmers are provided with inner tubes, she said.

Newport Beach, California: "Dive-In" Outdoor Movies on an Inflatable Screen in Newport Beach, California

The drive-in meets summer at ’s “Splash Bash” outdoor movie event. The “dive-in” movie on an inflatable screen is the perfect way too cool off and enjoy a movie with the family.

Dressed in a pink-rose-colored body suit, 2-year-old Emily Suh approached the edge of the swimming pool, wiggling her toes against the cold, wet concrete as she tried to muster up the courage to jump into the arms of her father. After brushing off a few straggling hairs blown across her face by the breeze, she leapt.

This wasn’t the kind of swimming lesson that Emily was used to. In fact, it wasn’t a swimming lesson at all. About 40 other children were in the same pool, splashing water, screaming with excitement and waiting to board the 45-foot multicolored inflatable Water Play Fun Run as part of the second-annual Splash Bash, a dive-in outdoor movie event presented by the City of Newport Beach Recreation and Senior Services Department.

“The program has grown from last summer to this summer,” said Adam Liu, assistant recreation coordinator of aquatics.

“We wanted to provide something for the community to do during the summer other than going to the beach.”

The event, held at Newport Harbor High School’s swimming pool, combines swimming with movie watching.

“It sounded like fun. I like movies, and I like to swim; so it’s pretty cool I can do both at once,” said 11-year-old Emilee of Costa Mesa.

Anchored at the north end of the pool was a 19-foot jumbo inflatable screen that remained deflated until dusk neared. As the sky whirled into a puffy blur of fuchsia and sapphire, the children splashed their way to the front of the pool, hanging on to whatever flotation device was near as the opening sequence to the 2006 Disney movie “Happy Feet” rolled.

“My kids were very excited when they saw the flier,” said Monique Lacher of Newport Beach. “On our way over here, they said, ‘We’re the luckiest kids in the world!’ ”

On July 27, the Splash Bash feature is Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller “Jaws” — a movie that made many fear what lurked beneath the ocean water.

“We thought, ‘what movie can we show to get an older crowd?’ ” Liu said. “It’s a great summer movie that teens will enjoy. We even plan to have shark piñatas. It’ll be lots of fun.”

WHAT: Splash Bash dive-in movie night featuring “Jaws”

WHERE: Newport Beach Harbor High School, 600 Irvine Ave., Newport Beach

WHEN: 6 to 9 p.m.

ADVICE: Bring your own flotation device
