Meriden, Connecticut: Mobile Film Ministry Takes Christian Movies on Tour

Mobile Film Ministry

Once Bessie Jasinski retires from her job at Philips Electronics next year, the pair plans to take to the road and bring films to parishes and campgrounds across the country.

James Jasinski, a 63-year-old former Wallingford police officer who has since retired, said he was called by God to start the ministry, but has received positive feedback from viewers who find it difficult to enjoy more mainstream entertainment with their families.

“They’re having a hard time, because the TV is inundated with violence and sex and everything else,” he said. “The same with secular movies in the theater – it’s hard to find good films nowadays.”

The story behind the idea traces back more than 30 years to James Jasinski’s time on the police force. While checking in at the department one day, he noticed a flyer posted by a officer about a Christian film he was planning on showing. The Jasinskis turned out, and plans for the movie ministry had been brewing ever since.

Athol, Massachusetts: Local Church Hosts Movies Under the Stars at a Drive-In-Style Screening

Drive-In Movies at a Church in Athol, MassachusettsSelectmen have approved a series of outdoor movie nights to take place at Fish Park. The movies are done drive-in style and are being put on by the Foursquare Church. The movies under the stars have been a popular event with church members and non-members alike.

“This was a successful event last year,” Selectman Anthony A. Brighenti said, reminding his colleagues at the selectmen’s meeting Tuesday night. Board Chairman Alan D. Dodge agreed. “It was well attended,” he said.

The Rev. Nicholas K. Morin, senior pastor of the church, said this is the second year that his church has brought the free outdoor film nights to the community. Plans call for five movies to be shown over the summer, and the showings will be similar to attending a drive-in movie theater. “You can watch in your car or outside of it. You just need a radio,” explained Rev. Morin.

The movies are rated G or PG and are oriented for family viewing. There are also snacks available. Movie nights will be held June 26, July 10 and 24, and Aug. 14 and 28.

Rev. Morin said the church puts on the movie series as part of a community outreach.

Local Church's Outdoor Movie Event Inspires More Outdoor Movies to Come

Church Hosts Outdoor Movie EventLast night we went to the second annual outdoor movie night at our church. Like last year, it was an enjoyable way to spend a warm summer night with other church community members. It reminded me of going to drive-in movies when I was a child, but it’s even better. The kids can move around more freely when they’re restless, and you can look up at the stars on a clear night. Not only is this a great summertime event for a church, but it would be fun for a neighborhood block party, or other community organizations. You can even host one at home for family and friends if you have a large enough yard. Here’s how to plan your own outdoor movie night:

Drive-in movies have become more difficult to find in recent years, and yet nostalgia remains for watching movies outside in the summertime. Luckily, today’s technology makes it easier than ever to create your own outdoor movie party. This type of party is perfect for a personal family and friends event, or a neighborhood get together, and it’s simpler to arrange than you might think.

Setting the Stage

Since this outdoor movie party will be held outside, and the lights will be low, decorations are almost unnecessary. However, you will have to pull out your technical skills, or enlist the help of a home theater buff to prepare for this party. You’ll need:

A Screen – Create your own outdoor movie screen by using an inexpensive, king-size , flat, white bedsheet. Tack the top and bottom onto thin strips of wood. Drill holes in the top of the wood so that you can hang it from the side of a house, garage, or any other building large enough for the screen.

A Sound and Projection System – You’ll need a home theater-in-a-box system including speakers and DVD player that is powerful enough to broadcast outside. You’ll also need a video projector to connect to the DVD player to project the movie. Use 6-foot wooden stakes to mount your speakers around your seating area. Or, for those of you with a little extra cash to spend, look into the growing outdoor cinema businesses that sell inflatable movie screens, projectors, and speakers all in one durable and easy-to-use package. For starters, check out Open Air Cinema’s products at www.openaircinema.us.

Chairs – Ask all your guests to bring lawn chairs unless you have enough to accomodate everyone. Families with young children might want to bring large blankets in case the kids become sleepy.

A Movie – Select a movie that is suitable for all age members at your party. Sometimes it’s fun to go with a classic that no one has seen in years. Or choose a classic sci-fi B movie to recreate that nostalgic drive-in experience.

Insect repellant- Fight off the nightly mosquito attack. Offer spray-on insect repellant to your guests. Place citronella candles in a wide enough swathe around the viewing area to chase away the bugs.

Food and Snacks

  • Popcorn, and lots of it. Serve the popcorn in movie theater style boxes that can easily be found at party stores.
  • Movie theater size boxes of candy.
  • Hot dogs served in red plastic baskets.
  • Plates of nachos.
  • Ice cream bars.
  • Soft drinks.

While all of this work to fix up the new Bethel Baptist Church of was going on, the group was also busy going from house to house evangelizing in the afternoons and holding outreach activities each night.
