“Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the many free films that have been shown in the Student Union Little Theater thanks to SUAB.
Movies at the Student Union offer free entertainment for students and the Stillwater community.
This semester the Student Union Activities Board will show “Law Abiding Citizen,” “The Men Who Stare At Goats,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “Sherlock Holmes” at no charge. They will also offer $1 concessions with profits going to the SUAB movies committee budget, Clarissa Hunter, SUAB movies committee chair, said.
Stillwater resident Jackie Miller brought three children — ages 13, 11 and 4 — to the Union to see the Sunday matinee of “Where the Wild Things Are.”
“I think it’s really nice that they do this and it’s free,” she said.
Miller’s son had just returned home from a weekend with his father. She was eager to spend time bonding with her son and came to see “Where the Wild Things Are” at the suggestion of a friend.
“I was looking for something to do with them and it was a movie they’d wanted to see,” Miller said.
Occasionally a movie will fill the Student Union Little Theater, which seats about 450 students, Hunter said. But usually the audience varies from between 100-200 people, she said. The SUAB is also responsible for movies shown on the library lawn and at the Colvin Center’s outdoor pool.
Movies the SUAB shows are supplied via a contract with Swank Motion Pictures.
According to Swank’s Web site, “Swank Motion Pictures provides both public performance licensing rights and licensed movies to numerous non-theatrical markets.”
Swank represents Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and Dreamworks Pictures, among many others.
The movies committee receives a list of titles available. They then make decisions based on funds available and what is popular in theaters.
