Outdoor movies in Sarasota, FloridaYou can see an ornery ogre named Shrek playing on the soccer fields of Heritage Harbour on Saturday evening. “Shrek,” the wildly popular animated movie about a bad ogre gone good, will be shown on a two-story-high portable screen at 7 p.m. The big outdoor screen will be set up on the soccer fields located near Heritage Harbour’s Central Park.

Saturday’s screening is the first stop in the Film Festival’s Moonlight Magic,” a series of popular family-friendly films to be shown at outdoor cinema locations in , Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch. Admission to the outdoor movies is free.
Eight additional outdoor film screenings are scheduled during the next three months.

“This keeps us in touch with the community and it gives people a chance to enjoy some no-cost entertainment,” said Hans Wohlgefahrt, outreach and education director for the Sarasota Film Festival. “It’s also a good change for people to get to know their neighbors better.”

Terri Behling, a spokeswoman for Heritage Harbour, said individuals and families can come early and play on a nearby playground, the surrounding fields, or just enjoy the sunset prior to the outdoor movie screenings.

“People are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets, anything you’d feel comfortable sitting on,” Behling said. “This is a great opportunity for families to come together and enjoy spending time together with others without spending any money.”

Prizes will be handed out for the best movie campsite and for the best movie-themed costume.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Wohlgefahrt said.

All Sarasota screenings are scheduled for 8 p.m. at G.WIZ Bayfront, 1001 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota
