Sebring, Florida: Outdoor Movies Kick Off Last Saturday in Sebring, Florida

Outdoor Movies in Sebring, FloridaThe Sebring Public Library's Saturday evening outdoor movie series kicked off Saturday, Dec.6, with the screening of "Lawrence of Arabia." Those who went to this free event enjoyed the sunset over Lake Jackson just before showtime, with cartoons running at 5:45 p.m. and the epic film starting at 6 p.m. The library's recently acquired 16-by-9 foot outdoor movie screen was set up in the back yard of the Highlands Art League Yellow House, next to the library on Lakeview Drive, three blocks from the Circle. People brought lawn chairs and blankets for seating, as well as their own snacks and drinks. Popcorn was available for a small donation. At future movie nights, concessions will be added under the sponsorship of the Highlands Art League. Mary Myers, director of library services, said the "Movies by Moonlight" series is scheduled to run every other Saturday evening through the winter, with the next film set for Dec. 20. "But," she added, "if we have a good turnout, if there is the demand, we would do this every weekend." Outdoor movies put on by park districts and cities are popular around the country, Myers said, and she's hoping this new film series will provide family friendly entertainment that people are looking for. "This is something totally different for the area and we're hoping that people will enjoy it and have fun," Mary Myers said. Myers said the library has access to just about any family friendly film, from the classics to recently run films. She invites people to make suggestions on films they'd like to see by e-mailing her at director@myhlc.org. The Friends of the Sebring Library made the film series possible. Myers applied for a $10,000 state library grant to purchase the audio and video equipment, but was funded only at $4,000. The volunteer Friends organization came through with a $7,000 donation. While testing the equipment Thursday evening, one passerby suggested to Myers that the big screen be used for an outdoor showing of the Super Bowl. Myers said that's a possibility, as are other big-screen events that could be held outdoors. "Now that we have the equipment, we're not limited to movies," she said. "We could put on special events, like showing the Super Bowl. We could have a community karaoke event, or have video game tournaments. "We're only limited," she added, "by where our imagination will take us." Read full article at: http://www2.highlandstoday.com/content/2008/dec/06/la-librarys-movies-by-moonlight-kicks-off-tonight/
