Morristown, Vermont: Outdoor Movie Nights Planned for Oxbow Park

Outdoor movies have a particular charm, largely because they combine two things people already like—films and being outside—and then add a mild element of unpredictability, usually involving weather. This summer, the Morristown Alliance for Culture and Commerce has leaned into that tradition by organizing four free outdoor movie nights at Oxbow Park, each one beginning at dusk, when the light fades and expectations rise. The films are carefully chosen to offend no one and please nearly everyone. All are rated G or PG, and all are the sort of movies that reward repeat viewing and shared quoting. The season opens on July 19 with The Wizard of Oz, featuring Judy Garland and a reminder that there’s no place like home, especially when you’ve brought a blanket. On July 26 comes Field of Dreams, followed by The Princess Bride on August 2, and finally Grease on August 9, ensuring that John Travolta closes out the series with energy to spare.

Seating opens at 7 p.m., and moviegoers are encouraged to arrive early, spread out picnic dinners, and watch the sun do its slow and cooperative disappearing act. The movies will be shown on a state-of-the-art 8’ x 10’ open air screen, with designated viewing areas for blankets, low chairs, and high chairs—an organizational detail that suggests hard-earned experience.

The Oxbow green will be fully accessible, complete with two restrooms (one handicapped accessible), and refreshments such as popcorn, candy, and drinks will be available for purchase by donation. Leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome, which seems only fair, given that they will almost certainly behave better than some humans.

If rain or high winds intervene—as they sometimes do—the event will move indoors to River Arts. Attendees are advised to call the Movieline on the day of the event for the latest updates, because nothing says summer cinema quite like checking the weather one last time before leaving the house.
