Once again this year Crown Center will offer free family films Friday nights on the Square. Screenings begin at 9 p.m. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. The schedule:

Book signing
Authors Mike and Vicki Walker will sign copies of their book Cinemental Journeys, a guide to Midwest movie theaters from the Golden Age of Hollywood, at 1 p.m. today at Barnes & Noble on the Plaza.
Musicals galore
Classic Hollywood musicals will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Tivoli Theatre.
Thom Poe, UMKC film educator, will conduct post-screening discussions. Admission is $3 (free to UMKC students and staff). The schedule:
June 24: “The Band Wagon”: This backstage Broadway comedy teams Astaire and Cyd Charisse.
July 1: “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”: Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell go husband hunting on a trans-Atlantic cruise in this campy classic from 1953.
July 8: “Oliver!”: In 1968 Charles Dickens’ novel became an Oscar-winning screen musical.
July 15: “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”: A tragic romance between a shop clerk (the luminous Catherine Deneuve) and an auto mechanic is the basis for this 1964 French release in which all the dialogue is sung.
