Netflix Outdoor Movie Rolling Roadshow
There are few ideas more likely to make a film lover pause, smile, and slightly rethink their life choices than this one: watching Jaws on a giant outdoor screen on the very beach in Martha’s Vineyard where it was filmed, or seeing Escape from Alcatraz while standing inside the cell block from which Clint Eastwood’s Frank Morris famously tunneled his way out. It is cinema, yes—but cinema with a distinct sense of mischief.
This August, the Netflix Rolling Roadshow leans enthusiastically into that mischief, celebrating classic American movies by screening them in the places that made them unforgettable. These are not casual “bring a blanket and sit quietly” affairs. Each outdoor screening is a full-scale interactive event, featuring such modest extras as scavenger hunts, road rallies, a high school prom, and even the opportunity to spend the night on Alcatraz Island—because apparently just watching the movie isn’t immersive enough.
Some screenings will also include cast reunions and question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, adding a helpful sense of perspective to proceedings. Presiding over all this is chart-topping singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb, who joins the Rolling Roadshow as its in-market host and goodwill ambassador. Known for charming audiences through music, film, and television—and currently starring in E! Entertainment’s reality show #1 Single—Loeb brings her effervescent personality and cool wit to all ten shows, cheerfully accompanying the Roadshow from coast to coast.
Her itinerary is impressively ambitious. On August 2nd, The Warriors lights up Coney Island in New York City. August 5th brings Jaws to Martha’s Vineyard, followed by Clerks in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 8th. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off appears in Northbrook, Illinois, on August 10th, with Field of Dreams screening the next day in Dyersville, Iowa. On August 16th, The Shining heads to Estes Park, Colorado, before The Searchers takes over Monument Valley, Utah, on August 18th. The Roadshow continues with Raising Arizona in Apache Junction on August 20th, The Poseidon Adventurein Long Beach on August 24th, and concludes on August 26th with Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco—where escaping afterward is, mercifully, optional.
It is, in short, a traveling celebration of American film that asks a simple question: if you’re going to watch a classic movie, why not do it somewhere that makes the experience just a little more unforgettable?
